1362457_roses_n_ringsI sat in the darkened church on Saturday night with tears filling up my eyes. My husband’s cousin was marrying the man of her dreams- the wedding was beautiful. It was very simple, just a gathering of family and close friends. They didn’t want more than that. Some people may wonder why this couple did not want more glitz and glamour- more money spent. The reason is very simple. They have a heart for a nation of people who are hurting. They wanted to put their money toward the people of Haiti. What an amazing couple. In lieu of a honeymoon, they traveled to Haiti back in November to minister to the orphans. When I look at them, I see the passion that they carry for the children of this impoverished nation.

At Christmastime, over the best authentic egg rolls you can imagine, I talked with this couple. They were making plans to adopt from Haiti even before they had ‘tied the knot.’ It is incredibly sweet to witness. They will be on a stand-still in the adoption process though because she is too young. When they are both of the appropriate age, their adoption window will be short, so it is good that they are thinking through their options early.

Adoption from Haiti continues to gain ground. There are many children in need of basic supplies such as: food, water and shelter. These same children need a loving home with parents who are willing to go the extra mile in order to make sure that their lives are comfortable, needs are met and wants are attended to. Haiti adoption is under strict regulation because of the major threat of fraud that occurred in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck this already poverty stricken country. The Haitian officials have rallied around the orphaned children in order to find them suitable homes and options. This is not an easy thing to accomplish in this situation where the conditions are so difficult and the need so great.

I am continually amazed at the out-pouring of love and generosity that has been shown to Haiti. They are far from being ‘recovered’ but have been given a better chance to pull out of the devastation and rebuild. They are a strong people and will continue to fight for their future. Anything that is given, done or ministered just makes that fight a little easier. I am blessed to be surrounded by such kind and generous souls.

Haiti is open for adoption. This country is not Hague Convention certified and does not hold to its statutes.
